Partisan York

On the first weekend of the October half-term holidays we decided to head South on the train and visit friends (outdoors and socially distanced, of course) in the beautiful, walled city of York. No trip is complete without a visit to the legendary Betty's https://www.bettys.co.uk/cafe-tea-rooms/our-locations/bettys-york which we enjoyed on the Saturday morning, insider tip, the earlier you go the better to claim a table.

On the Sunday morning, however, we wanted to try somewhere new. During our pre-visit research, we came across a promising looking cafe/restaurant on Micklegate called Partisan https://www.partisanuk.com/ . We eagerly walked along the famous city walls to reach our chosen destination to discover a small queue already forming outside soon followed by the dreaded phrase, "Have you made a booking?". We had not but were soon seated in their outdoor seating area having already been oogling their window display of homemade cakes, scones and pastries as well as one of our favourite coffees,Monmouth, https://www.monmouthcoffee.co.uk/ .

Having gained a healthy appetite after our walk around the city walls, I went for the Partisan breakfast consisting of: two free range fried eggs, local butcher's herb sausage and smoked streaky bacon, black pudding, roasted ripe vine tomatoes, mushrooms, fried potatoes, and homemade smoky baked beans. Served with sourdough toast and butter. This arrived sizzling in its own skillet was hearty yet extremely tasty with the individual ingredients lovingly sourced.

The good lady, to start with, opted for their cheese and walnut scone which was obligingly warmed through and deemed a success; the pear and chocolate brownies which were later purchased to go was further evidence of some serious in-house baking skills.

Mrs. Boyd chose the slightly more sophisticated French Toast with Partisan's own twist on this modern classic. Again served in its own skillet, this consisted of: sourdough French toast topped with honey roasted fruit, fresh berries and seasonal fruit, Mascarpone and Canadian maple syrup. I managed to claim a spoonful and was impressed but not overtly jealous as I was wolfing down their delightful breakfast. Served alongside the quality Monmouth coffee our research was rewarded but next time we will learn our lesson and pre-book a table to avoid disappointment.
